By the time he was
43 years old
Shakespeare had written
at least
37 plays
154 sonnets
and
5 narrative poems
Some time ago
I read a theory
that he never actually
wrote any of this down
on paper
In fact
none of his work
was formally published
until 7 years
after his death
So there’s Shakespeare
walking around London
on a Monday afternoon
thinking up these
immortal characters, plots, dialogue
while purchasing a cut
from the butcher
Then Monday night
he silently memorizes
his thoughts
while attending
a board meeting
of the Globe Theatre
And here I am
400 years later
playing with
a fourth of his vocabulary
and
feeling
utterly inconvenienced
when my
internet connection
fails
to
authenticate
